Tarte Tatin
How to Make Tarte Tatin
(A classic French upside-down caramelized apple tart)
Ingredients
-
6–7 medium apples (firm varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
-
100 g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
-
150 g (3/4 cup) granulated sugar
-
1 sheet puff pastry (or shortcrust pastry)
-
Optional: cinnamon or vanilla extract for extra flavor
Instructions
1. Prepare the apples
-
Peel, core, and quarter the apples.
-
Cut large pieces if needed so they fit nicely in the pan.
2. Make the caramel
-
Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
-
In a heavy, oven-safe skillet or pan, melt butter over medium heat.
-
Add sugar and cook until it melts and turns golden brown, stirring gently.
-
Optional: add a pinch of cinnamon or a few drops of vanilla.
3. Arrange the apples
-
Carefully place apple quarters upright in the caramel in the pan.
-
Cook for 5–8 minutes on medium heat so the caramel slightly thickens and coats the apples.
4. Cover with pastry
-
Roll out the puff pastry to slightly larger than the pan.
-
Place the pastry over the apples, tucking the edges down around the apples.
5. Bake
-
Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
6. Invert the tart
-
Let the tart cool for 5–10 minutes.
-
Place a large plate over the pan and carefully flip it to release the tart upside down.
-
Be cautious—caramel will be hot.
7. Serve
-
Serve warm or at room temperature.
-
Optional: serve with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
